How do two VLANs talk?

What ways do VLAN talk to each other and how do they share a internet connection, without talking to each other? Does the switch need to be a L3 switch?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. You either need a L3 switch or a router connected with trunk to the switch.
How do they share an internet connection?
For every VLAN you have to set a default gateway. It's used to connect to the networks that don't belong to the same subnet.
In order for them to access Internet - you have to either set default router like pointing to your ISP router/modem/whatever.
If you want to block traffic between VLANs you have to set up ACL limiting traffic between them.

Any layer 3 device (multi-switch, router or firewall) will define the edge of a VLAN.
