"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

A file server is just a place to store files and has no way to validate any information inside that file.

A records management system manages records within a file.  It will validate the records contain the required data in the required fields and that the data meets specific requirements.  Example, if you require a phone number, a RMS system will force you to enter a phone number and force you to enter something that resembles a phone number.
