FM Pro Lagging and shows a blue spinning circle??

Often when maneuvering around the databases, users are presented with the spinning blue circle.  Why?  What can we do to streamline and speed up FMpro?  We use FM Pro 13 (both server and client), and the clients are on Windows 7 32-bit PCs (32-bit needed because we still have some DOS programs we are using).  Thank you.

Start with checking your network connection speed on all workstations and the server. Ideally they should be all be gigabit ethernet. Sometimes people have newer workstations that are gigabit ethernet but somewhere between the workstation and the server is a Fast Ethernet (100BaseT) or even an original 10BaseT device that is choking traffic.

Also check your server to make sure that it it setup according to best practices. Two of the most important things are: 1) turning off indexing for any hard disks used by FM Server (highlight the disk in Windows Explorer and check the Properties), 2) make sure third-party backup software is not trying to backup the live files. Backup software should ONLY be used to backup the "Backups" folder, not the "Databases" folder, both in the Data folder.

Consider running FM Server on and SSD rather than a mechanical drive. Also, in my experience FMS 14 runs noticeably faster than 13. Make sure the server is not being used for anything else, just FMS.
