Staging ESXi Upgrades in vCenter Update Manager

Greetings,
I am running vCenter 5.5 Update 2b and ESXi hosts running 5.5U2b as well. My task to to upgrade the hosts to U3a - build 3116895-A01. I would like to stage the upgrade prior to patching it, but in the staging dialog, I do not see the upgrade listed. This may be by design based on the reading here - http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-55/index.jsp#com.vmware.vsphere.update_manager.doc/GUID-BEF797B1-318D-46B3-8ACC-18DB5EF71D92.html. This only mentions staging patches and extensions. Is it possible to stage an upgrade, and if so, how can this be done?

Thank you

Upgrade is 5.1->5.5
What you do is update, and first you "Scan", then "Stage" to at least one machine (for VUM to download VIB files), for other machines staging does not matter much, you can stage them all at once and then "Remediate" all in a row.

Hi GHeist,
I did the scan first, but still cannot seem to stage the upgrade files - this article indicates that staging works for patches and extensions, but does not mention upgrades.

"Staging allows you to download the patches and extensions from the Update Manager server to the ESX/ESXi hosts"

It seems like ti cannot be done.

It will not start installing without having full file on ESXi.
Probably ESXi is on same subnet as vcenter and it only stages very huge patches.

I am not upset at all.
Upgrade is when you align ESXi with vcenter version, what you do is simple nearly automatic update. I think you are worrying too much about it.
