Create certificate for encrypting connectins with SQL

How do I go about creating a certificate that can be used for securing connections between the SQL server and web server.  I understand that there is a choice between SSL and IPSEC.  Is one preferred over the other?  Where can I get the certs?  The SQL server is not part of a domain.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I think you can use Subject Alternative Name certificates and you can test by using a domain issued certificate, the follow steps like described  here:

That generated certificate should be able to be seen and used by SQL Server, and once the domain cert will be added as a trusted publisher the client must be able to connect securely.

If my sql server is a stand alone server, how do I create a certificate for it?  I was told that I can' t get a cert if its not part of a domain

Please see step 10 under "Create a Certificate Request" from link above:

"If the server is part of a Windows domain, it must be the fully qualified name of the server including the domain. If the server is not part of a Windows domain, it must be the NetBios name of the server."
