Upgrading Windows Vmware Vcenter 5.1 Update 1 into VCenter 5.5 Update 3 steps and caveats ?

Hi All,

My current Windows VCenter Server 5.1 Update 1 is running as VM with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition (64-bit) (SP2) - 10.0.4000.0

So when I'm trying to do the upgrade to the latest VMware VCenter Server 5.5 Update 3, what is the involved steps and the caveats that I need to know ?

Can I take the VCenter VM as a clone as the backup and rollback plan ?

Thanks.

Yes, I would recommend you have a FULL Backup (not a snapshot), e.g. a CLONE will do of the current vCenter Server before you start.

The upgrade is very easy.....

1. Download the ISO
2. Mount the ISO in the current vCenter VM.
3. Run the setup, and follow the wizard, it will detect the current installation, and proceed with an Upgrade.
4. Once complete, check it works.
5. if it fails, restore clone and try again.

It should take approx 30 minutes, and does not affect running VMs, whilst you do it.

Should all be taken care of in the upgrade!

Personally, we do *NOT* do upgrades, too many things break!

So we just install a new vCenter Server.

How do you perform the settings migration of Windows VCenter server from 5.1 U1 to 5.5 U3 ?

I've never heard about it before.
