unable to insert chart into powerpoint and word 2013

Hi

We have a strange issue where we are unable to insert charts in Word and Powerpoint (office 2013 x64), once the insert chart dialog is open and you select the required chart and click OK it just returns back to the insert chart dialog (no excel style window loads)

I have done the following

1) Quick repair
2) Full repair
3) roll office 2013 update back to version 15.0.4763.1003 (other machines have this version and are working)
4) removed all updates since the problem was noticed

This is on a server 2008 R2 server used for RDP so its not really possible to uninstall office and other forums I have read still didn't fix the issue by removing office. I have another identical server and it does not have the chart issue.

I am now lost with what else to try, have looked at process monitor and compared against a working machine and can't spot anything obvious.

3 options to solve this issue

A) Start Excel, create your chart there (ideally on a separate chart sheet). then select and copy the chart, switch back to PPT, click the triangle beneath Paste and under Paste Special click one of the left small icons.

solution number 2
B) this could be office user template or permissions problem. creating a new user account and try it will work.

C) check if there is no third party Excel Add-in enabled.
