Regular Express to Validate Email

Some code I inherited uses this Regular Expression to validate an email address format

var _RE_eMail = /[\w.]+@[\w.]+\.\w+/;

if (  _emailVal != ''  && _RE_eMail.test( _emailVal) )  {
   ... etc ...

But this does not allow hyphens in the email, and we have people that have valid email addresses with hyphens

Could you please help me with a better Re Expression?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Try this.
var _RE_eMail = /^[^@]+@[^@]+\.[^@\.]{2,}$/;

Open in new window

Try adding and escaped hyphen into the expression.  You decide if you want it in both address and domain sections

Only accept hyphen in the address part
var _RE_eMail = /[\w.\-]+@[\w.]+\.\w+/;

Accept hyphen in the address and domain sections
var _RE_eMail = /[\w.\-]+@[\w.\-]+\.\w+/;
