asked on

WordPress - Custom Theme?

I have inherited a WordPress site that seems to have been built with a custom theme.

I have been asked to make changes to the main page. When viewed in WordPress edit mode, it is empty.

So I'm guessing I have to modify the Theme itself?

See attached.

How do I modify the Theme? And what are the consequences on the other pages?

Thanks

Can't say for sure based on a screenshot but check Appearance | Widgets and see if the contents of the home page are actually all widgets.  This is a fairly common approach in WordPress.

If you can't do what you are supposed to do with simple widget manipulation, then you have to figure out which theme template file is setting the home page.  The visual editor will not come into play in either situation.

ASKER

Jason,

I found how they did it. See attached, note "FrontPage Template Page Template". I have opened that in the editor, it's all straightforward html / php. I see how to do what I want to do.

But is there a way to do it and TEST it before I make it live (in case I screw up)?

Thanks,

Richard
