Office Professional Plus 2010 Keeps Configuring / Installing when opening Word or Excel files

One of our users who has a Dell Latitude laptop with Windows 7 Enterprise x64 showed me that when she runs Word (either using the Start menu or double-clicking a Word file) it says "Configuring Office" or similar. She said it hangs there but while working with the machine today I found that if you wait it will eventually open the document after about 1 minute or two.

Discussion on the web refers to having previous versions of Office which she doesn't have and add-ons which she doesn't have. One of my coworkers said he ended up needing to reimage a machine that was having this issue a while back. I can do that but this is a faculty member who has quite a few special scientific apps that would take a while to reinstall and needs to use the laptop to work either at home (saving files on the laptop) or from home (via VPN) so I'd prefer to fix the issue rather than reimaging if I can.

Anyone have a resolution for this?

When doing the install click the  customize install  then right-click and RUN ALL FROM MY COMPUTER .  It appears as if it was trying to call files everytime an application in office was opened up.

User is not in today and I am out all next week so I will not be able to look at this again until Monday November 30th. We configure these computers so it only has office 2010.
