convert a raw dd to vmdk for virtualbox on windows

i think the title explains it all :)

I need to convert a raw dd image to vmdk for use on windows virtualbox

i am trying liveview right now but having some problems with it ... looks like it has some dependencies, like vddk and this is not working on my system ... i'll try again .. any suggestions ... i downloaded the vddk that goes with vsphere and it just does not seem to work... it is a collection of dll's... but liveview insists on finding some requirement installed ... and there is no installation media in the .zip file

i've also found some uncompiled utilities such as dd2vmdk, and raw2vmdk ... but i don't have a compiler on this computer and i am not sure they are intended for use on windows ....

i do prefer windows as i'm much more familiar ...

thanks for your help

vboxmanage convertfromraw

Read on and construct parameters...

Don't know exactly what it is you what to do with that image.

If you just want to access it (view what's inside) then you can mount it using OSFMount:
Most commonly used options in bold
linux$ vboxmanage convertfromraw
VBoxManage convertfromraw   <filename> <outputfile>
                            [--format VDI|VMDK|VHD]
                            [--variant Standard,Fixed,Split2G,Stream,ESX]
                            [--uuid <uuid>]

Liveview pretty old and not maintain since 2009 (as it started) and raw2vmdk requires Java which can be bulky and constantly need to maintain a supported runtime version which is not ideal too..for the latter there should be the running of ready jar (, there is a readme too for the commands in the project ( This project is also no longer being maintained.
raw2vmdk v0.1.3.2 has a bug - once the vmdk file is created, edit the vmdk file and fix the path to the raw file (in my case instead of D:\Temp\flash_16gb.raw (created by winhex) the generated path was D:Tempflash_16gb.raw). Then, open it in a vmware virtual machine version 6.5-7 (5.1 was refusing to attach the vmdk harddrive).
Probably you may check out free tool like StarWind V2V Converter ( that It also supports IMG disk format and performs sector-by sector conversion between IMG, VMDK or VHD into and from any of them. Or  VBoxManage as shared by gheist which is not bad too.
