"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I assume you are looking for free software, since free hardware implies something that was old or broken enough that it was thrown out. (I enjoy the challenge of trying to use such hardware, this is not a criticism!)

The three main contenders I hear about are FreeNAS, NAS4Free (which are very similar, having started from the same roots), and Napp-It (whose ZFS heritage is a little closer to the Solaris original). While I haven't used any of them yet, I'm hoping to try a virtual instance of Napp-It this weekend.

Well, I would like to narrow down the testing volume. As is there are a loads of systems, and one would need to install and test them all to see how they work.

A shortcut is a nice thing.

To reply the Q: yes, I am looking for a free software. I have some old servers lying around, which would be well utilized as storage servers.
Since you're looking for free software to use with your old servers, FreeNAS is the way to go. You can load it straight onto your old hardware and set everything up from the GUI.  It's speed will be based on your hardware so at least use a GB NIC.  You can also use 2 NICS and team them.

I ran it on my old PowerEdge 840 with 4 GB of RAM and 1TB hard drive and it worked with no issues for what I wanted to do.

Give it a try.
