How far does encryption go with Linux Mint 17.2?

I am running Linux Mint 17.2 on my computer. I encrypted the Home folder. What I would like to know is what this means? Does it mean that anybody trying to access my Home folder (unless he/she knows my password) from the Internet will get goobly gook and the same if somebody finds my computer if not logged in my account on the machine or if I communicate over the Internet is all encrypted? In other words, to what extent does encryption go when using Linux Mint on the computer or over the Internet?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. there is no outside access protocol to go to your home folder on any linux unless you install one.
if somebody steals your computer for its data, not for pawn shop value, they will meet with well encrypted file in your home directory where all your files are safe for next 20 years.
while you are logged in and seeing your files root user can see them too, and others on system according to permissions (see umasks in login.defs and profile.d to protect you)
SSH is encrypted, VNC usually not

Besides encrypting, you should use strong passwords as well. In case someone has or gets physical access to your machine, they should not be able to 'guess' your password and access your files.
