How far does encryption go with Linux Mint 17.2?

I am running Linux Mint 17.2 on my computer. I encrypted the Home folder. What I would like to know is what this means? Does it mean that anybody trying to access my Home folder (unless he/she knows my password) from the Internet will get goobly gook and the same if somebody finds my computer if not logged in my account on the machine or if I communicate over the Internet is all encrypted? In other words, to what extent does encryption go when using Linux Mint on the computer or over the Internet?

Besides encrypting, you should use strong passwords as well. In case someone has or gets physical access to your machine, they should not be able to 'guess' your password and access your files.
