We have inherited a multi tenet exchange environment on windows server 2012 that is currently not running any CU on it.

I would like to know if there is any expert out there that knows if there is a proven update path to CU10 straight from Release or do we have to install CU1 through CU10 to get it there?

You just install CU10.  It is a cumulative upgrade.

I was a Tier 3 Exchange engineer for 15 months working for Microsoft.

I walked many people through these upgrades.  In fact, I just upgraded a client that was on Exchange 2010 RTM.  No updates at all.  We immediately went to SP3 then RU11.  No issues at all.

Be sure you have a good backup just to be on the safe side.

Also you want to install the CU in this order.....

1.Client Access Server (if you have multiple sites internet facing sites first)
2.Hub Transport
3.Mailbox
4.Unified Messaging

You want to work from the outside into the mailbox servers.

SP1 was just CU4.  After that Microsoft decided to stop using the service pack term.
