Excel Formula

Hi!
I have 20,000 cells with names in them. Some are individuals, some are families.   These are in column A.  In column B every cell is filled with the word individual.  I need to fill in B with the word family for any cell in column A that has "&" in it.  I am thinking I use an "if" formula, but I'm not sure how to get the results I need.  I'm not familiar with how to use "if" formulas.
Can anyone help me?  Is this possible?  Thanks in advance for your help!
Lisa :)
PS, I'm using Excel 2013

Hi Lisa,

Could you upload a sample of the data. That would help to come up with an appropriate solution.

Thanks,
Yama.

You'd want this formula in the B column:

=IF(ISNUMBER(FIND("&",A1)),"Family","Individual")

What this will do is check for the & in cell A1. If it's found, it will put the word Family, if not it will put Individual.

You can use the auto-fill tool then to copy this to all cells in column B, and it will auto-adjust the row number.

Hi Lisa,

Please also try this formula at your end and see if it can help:

IF(ISNUMBER(SEARCH("&",A2)),"Family","Indivitual")

So, I've put my formula in and used the auto-fill tool to pull it down to the other cells. You can see the result in the attached document.

Thanks, all of your solutions worked.  Can I accept them individually and give you all, all the points, or do I have to accept as multiple?  Thanks soooo much for saving me hours of work!
