Outlook 2013 Messagin Interface Error

Hi,

We have a user who, when opening Outlook  is getting the error message "The operation failed. The messaging interfaces have returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart Outlook"

The message appears and sometimes will then auto close Outlook, but other times clicking OK will just get rid of the message and Outlook then functions as normal.

I have run a full repair on the Office install and the email account being used, disabled all add-ins,  setup a new email profile, ran all up to date Windows/Office updates, opened using the outlook.exe /resetnavpane and then today a full removal / re-installation of Office.

The version is 2013 Home & Business (15.0.4771.1000), and the email account is a local exchange account which is using Exchange Server 2010  (14.01.0438.000).

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I looked through all you did. The next step is to create a new, test, Windows User Profile (Account). Log into the new Windows Account and test Outlook.

If it works in the new Windows Profile, then the user's profile may have been damaged.

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion.

Unfortunately I created a new email account under another profile and received the same error? I then also created a new email account on the domain admin account which also gave the same error.
What operating system ?

For Windows 7 and above, run System File Checker and see if that fixes the OS problem. Open cmd.exe with Run as Administrator and run SFC /SCANNOW twice. Allow to complete, shut down (power off), start up and test.

If SFC does not work, you need to consider a Windows Repair Install. It varies by OS but for Windows 7 and 8 and you need the Windows DVD. For Windows 10, you can use the media creation tool.

I have since created the same email account on another machine away from the office and had the same error. So it is looking like an issue with the actual email profile rather than the domain user profile.

Both Outlook 2013. The original users machine is on WIndows 7 Pro, and the second on Windows 10. I did try the SFC scan on the Windows 7 machine but im guessing this is not relevant now I have had the same error away from this machine.
If the account is a local account, backup the PST file, delete the mail profile in Outlook, and run SCANPST.EXE against the PST file to look for errors. SCANPST is in the Program folder for Outlook.  Restart, create a new mail profile and test.

If the account is Exchange, delete the OST file, delete the local mail profile in Outlook. Restart the computer. Now create a new email account (profile) and let the OST synchronize. Test this setup.

Hi John

We have tested this exchange mailbox away from the problematic machine, i.e. my machine at our office.

I add their account via outlook anywhere and we get the same error (different laptop) that's with and without cached mode enabled.

thanks
It would appear, then, that you have to repair the mailbox in Exchange. This can be done, but you would need an Exchange expert to help you.
