Thanks for your response, I will check the logs when I return to that system.  I also will try another system to see if the behavior continues.  McAfee is my choice of protection, feel too risky to remove.

You can turn McAfee off for a short time to test.  The Majority of virus scanners on the Mac are basically scanning for Windows viruses to keep them from spreading to Windows users.

There are still only a handful of true Mac Malware.  That is changing now, but you should be safe even if you don't have an Antivirus scanner for you Mac.  Blocking flash, java, and scripting in your browser should protect you from the browser based attacks and keep you safe enough during the short term without a Mac virus scanner running.

Thank you. Did that.
Rebooted and tried again same (-54)
Ran diagnostics. All ok but iTunes helper not there or running. ???

Had missing  Music in my iTunes library so I added the music from my computer to the library and it had to convert the format   Took a long time and only tried a few CDs. Had to add to the Store.

New to this Mac world  so very baffling. Since I already had these CDs and I then want to be able to see / hear them  on all my devices and sharing and Apple music subscribed, it should work.  Never see them on either  The iPhone or the iPad
I've now tried adding them to iCloud music.

Is this all just a mess?

Actually, you should have deleted this if it didn't help you.  You shouldn't give points if the answer didn't help you.

It was helpful and can help others. The device was damaged and had corruptions

Think I will restart that next year

It's a shame to lose good information that can benefit others
