Exchange 2007 migration to 2013

Hi,

Looking to upgrade from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013 within an infrastructure. Current system has a single Exchange 2007 box and an ISA box which also has mail marshal on it with twin nics one outside and one inside. Need to upgrade to Exchange 2013 as 2007 support now dropped with Outlook 2016.

Can we build a new machine and install Exchange 2013 on it and join this to the existing infrastructure with both versions of Exchange co-existing? Will the AD prep done by Exchange 2013 be ok on an AD that has already got Exchange 2007 prep on it? The Domain controllers are separate boxes so the Exchange 2007 box only has Exchange on it.

Are there any issues with trying to run two versions and migrate mailboxes from one to the other over time? Is there any helpful configuration options within Exchange to setup a secondary server to the 2007 master and how do you swap the secondary to a master after the migration is done?

Looking for some general advice and any helpful pointers in undertaking this type of migration.

Thank you
