print screen when extending monitor

Hi,

I have extended my monitor of the window laptop with other big screen. when i click 'PrtSc'(print screen) button it is print screening both monitors(screens) which i do not want. When i click ALT+PrtSc then it is print screening only my laptop monitor. But problem is if i open some window(say messenger) on laptop ALT+PrtSc is printing only top window like messenger but not the whole laptop screen. I want whole laptop screen not just top window. How do i achieve it. please advise

Use Cntrl-PrtScn for full display

it printscreens both monitors which i do not want. I want active laptop complete monitor(not active window of active monitor)
I am not that inclined towars snipping tool etc tools as i have to manually do some work to cut and crop and copy paste etc
I don't think you're going to find a way to get the printscreen you are looking for with multiple displays.

In many years I've never found a way to do it.  That's why I switched to snipping.  Even on computes with one screen that is all I use.

All, my comment above still hold.  This has been a function of the windows environment for years.  Alt-PrtScn copies the active window, Cntrl-PrtScn print the entire desktop.  Check the file attached.This-was-the-Active-Window-on-my-mu.docx

This is the output of hitting the Cntrl-PrtScn combination.  It works fine across multiple monitors and is built in.  No extra click or steps.

This was the Active Window on my mutli screen display.  I hit Alt-PrtScn and only that window is copied.
i agree. But when i hit Alt-PrtScn only that window of Active multi screen is printed. But if i have say 3 windows on active multi screen how  to capture all 3 in one click.

I use print screen quite often could not figure out a way to do it without using external tools which takes longer time?

as attached right had side active multi screen i want to capture both notepad and word document print screen as well both (not just top notepad on right hand side). please advise

Are you certain you hit Alt-PrtScr?  I cannot make mine do a full both screens copy without hitting Cntrl-PrtScn.  Tried many times.  I have used this method for documentation long before SnagIt or any other screen capture tool was released.

for me  Cntrl-PrtScn and  PrtScn (withougt  Cntrl) works same way which prints both screens.

my requirement is to print only one screen but all the windows present on the one active screen like both MS word and note pad as i shown in last attachment?

is that is possible?

Alt-PrtScn prints only notepad but not the MS word

what i want is as attached here.

Same for me — on a 3-monitor W7 machine, Ctrl-PrtScn and Prt-Scn both capture all three monitors. You've had two previous suggestions that are excellent: Greenshot (third-party, but free) and the Snipping Tool (built into W7/W8/W10). Another idea is to use Prt-Scn, which you obviously like (me, too!) and then crop the one screen that you want with any imaging tool that you prefer. This is the way that I capture all of the screenshots for my articles, videos, and posts here at EE, as discussed in these two articles:
How To Embed Screenshots in Posts
How to Embed Screenshots and Other Files with My Personal Knowledgebase

The imaging tool that I use is IrfanView (free!), but many others will do. It takes a few keystrokes and mouse clicks to do it, along these lines:

Prt-Scn
Run IrfanView
Ctrl-V (Paste)
Select area with the mouse (drag from upper left to lower right)
Edit>Crop selection

You now have the image you want. Save it anywhere as any file type (BMP, JPG, PNG, etc.). Once you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature. I experimented with Greenshot (great product, btw) and still occasionally use the Snipping Tool, but prefer the Prt-Scn/IrfanView combination (or Alt-PrtScn, when all I want is the active/focus window). If I wanted what you want, I'd just use the snipping tool
any short cut to launch sniping tool..or every time go to start-->all programs-->snipping tool--->new image etc all these steps i have to do for simple print screen?
please advise
I just pin the snipping tool to the task bar.
> any short cut to launch sniping tool

Yes! You may assign a shortcut key to the Snipping Tool to make it easy to access by just tapping a key. I assigned the numeric keypad minus sign to it, because it's in the uppermost right side of the keyboard and easy to remember and access. You make the assignment via a right-click/Properties on its shortcut in the Accessories group. Here's what it looks like:

User generated image
Click into the Shortcut key field and then tap whatever key you want to be the shortcut key. It's the best way to access the Snipping Tool, imo, but I still prefer the PrtScn/IrfanView combo. Regards, Joe

what is Num. I do not see o my keyboard. when i type Num - says error as attached.
Is there is any other simple alternative for this?
ErrSnipping.png
You do not type in "Num -". You hit that single key on your keyboard — it is the numeric keypad minus sign — it is one key. Or you could hit the "s" key and it will generate Alt-Ctrl-s and that would be your shortcut to the Snipping Tool. Or you could hit any function key, such as F1, F2, etc. — a single key — and that would be your shortcut to the Snipping Tool.

Update: I just looked at you screenshot better and see the problem. You put "Num -" in the wrong field. You put it in "Start in" instead of in "Shortcut key". Click in the "Shortcut key" field and type a single letter (which will generate Alt-Ctrl-letter) or a single numeric keypad key or a single funtion key. That's it — very simple.

that worked. now F10 is my shortcut key. Not sure why backspace did not worked to remove that. I have to click 'Start in' and then tab then F10 to do it.
what it means by start in which is empty now??
> that worked. now F10 is my shortcut key.

Great! Use the same technique if you'd like it to be some other function key.

> what it means by start in which is empty now??

It's the folder where the program starts. Being blank is fine — mine is blank.
