Intel Network Send and Receive Buffers

Intel network cards offer an option to increase the number of send and receive buffers, but says it should probably not be necessary.  I do have occasional network issues, probably unrelated to the buffers.  My machines have ample memory, so increasing the buffers is not an issue there.  However, too many buffers can adversely affect performance.  Does anyone have any real world experience as to whether the number of buffers matters?

Unfortunately, there are postings suggesting this, especially for a server.  Intel is unclear on when buffers should be increased.
Intel doesn't provide any guidance on this, just the option to increase the setting.
