I am doing a migration from Exchange  2010 TO 2016. I'm using the Exchange Server Deployment from Microsoft. The one question that I have is. Can I run Exchange 2016 without the Edge Transport Server? I will be demoting the 2010 server and will only have this one 2016.

Yes.  An Edge Transport server isn't necessary.  In fact, if a server has the Edge role, it cannot have any other roles as it will be sitting in your DMZ and not be joined to your domain.

Here is an article explaining Edge Transport.

If you aren't using an Edge now, there is not a reason to introduce one.

You can run Exchange without the edge server but you will have to implement some type of 3rd party appliance or  solution whether on premise or online for your spam/antivirus.

Thank you very much. as a note I do use Avast sever for my mail currently and it is doing a great job. I have been thinking about using GFI Max Mail as well, but I do not see any need for it at the moment.
