Server Audit with SCCM 2012

vmdude used Ask the Experts™

I am looking to do a systems audit of all our servers in our IT department. I'm not looking for application, all im want to audit is the following

Server Name
IP Address
Operating System

Can this be done with SCCM 2012? if not then does anyone have any suggestions for how this information can be gathered?

Yes, it can be done and is probably already there for you if you have installed the Reporting Point role.
Note, if you think people will be doing lots of reporting it's wise to offload the role to another machine and not use your main SQL box, (unless it's high spec) or your site server. The reason is simple: people will start writing queries and some may well not be very efficient and really hammer the box. You don't want that happening on your site server.

Note, you can see machine names and OS from the console itself, but you have to add an extra columns. Sadly you can't export that so you have two choices:

Out of the box there is a huge (over 500) list of standard reports.
See Anoop's list here:

From memory, I don't think there's one with name, IP and OS though, so you can write a query yourself or copy the nearest standard report and modify the copy.

You can also search for RDL files as someone is bound to have done this already, and you can import the RDL directly in 2 mins.

Final note: you need to have Hardware Inventory enabled for this to work. Do not be fooled into thinking you need Software Inventory. It is a badly named action. HW collects all hardware AND software info by itself. SW inventory collects custom info of specific file types and even copies those files. It is very SQL and disk intensive so is only needed for short periods - a week at most - until you have the evidence you want. It is the forensic option and you really don't want it on.
