Neither is setting the back colour to the colour of the button - it sets it to the backcolour of the form. &nbsp;Isn't there a property that I can set to say that the back colour is the button in this instance?

Color.Transparent is not a very good choice of words. It does not really make the Control transparent.<br />
<br />
When you set the BackColor to Transparent, a Control takes up the Backcolor of its Parent. So there is no way, for standard controls, to make them Color.SeeThrough, which is what most programmers expect from Transparent.<br />
<br />
There are exceptions however. I cannot say why, but Color.Transparent will work if you set the Parent of the control to most controls that can be used as containers. That is why it works over the BackgroundImage of a Form. But it also works with a Panel.<br />
<br />
If you put the Image in a Panel and set the Panel as the Parent of you Label (Label1.Parent=Panel1.Pare<wbr />nt), then transparency will work. The problem there is that you will not get the feeling that the Panel is pushed as you do with a Button. You will have to do a few trick with graphics in the background if you absolutely need to have the &quot;feel&quot; of a Button.

Thanks for the explanation. &nbsp;I'm actually using an image now and not a button so this could be an option. &nbsp;However, perhaps the best thing is to actually use a button and update the text within it. &nbsp;The problem is that the buttons have square edges, and I need the button to have rounded edges. &nbsp;Is there a way to do this that is straight forward?

you can use the same approach described in <a href="https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/28906169/VB-net-round-corners-of-panel-within-form.html?anchorAnswerId=41389675#a41389675" rel="ugc">Rounded panel</a> to achieve the rounded button. Just derive a class from button like custom panel, a class called custom button and do the same work as done in on paint background of custom panel.<br />
