Windows 10 update crashes dell laptop
I have been using my dell xps laptop with Windows 10 three months with no problems. However, today one of Microsoft's updates occurred and now I have an an error 0xc000000f and my computer cannot be recovered Before I take it in for service is there something I can do without a recovery disk? I ran a full system diagnostic without any errors
Thanks. Hlen

Here is a Tom's hardware thread that suggests BIOS must be reset to AHCI. I have not seen that particular error before.

If you are able at least start, then use the Microsoft Windows 10 recovery link, NOT a 3rd party link as suggested above. Why? Microsoft keeps Windows 10 licensing in their store and the link below knows that.

All I have to access the Internet is my iPad. My laptop is offline. Any suggestions?
You will need another client for all solutions. Can you ask a friend?
To follow Leonie's Suggestion, you'd need to create a windows setup USB drive or DVD, first. So if your IPad doesn't have a USB port, you'd have to burn a setup DVD from the setup ISO, that you'll need to download from some place. It would be better if you already had a windows setup DVD - do you?
Use a Microsoft link as provided earlier, because if you can burn the Windows 10 ISO to a DVD and start it, Microsoft will recognize the license immediately.
Also, when you get to the point you can start the computer in some way, check the hard drive for errors as that could have caused the issue.
Good day,
Since you cannot access another Windows machine, try As Mr. Hurst suggest to reset BIOS/UEFI to AHCI.
To access the BIOS/UEFI , press F2 while turning Dell machine ON. After one inside BIOS/UEFI press F9 to set BIOS default. Then check in Advanced Tab check that SATA Operation is set to AHCI.
One may press F10 to save and restart your system.
Now check if Windows boots normally. If not try to set SATA Operation in BIOS/UEFI to ATA then save and restart your machine.

That did not work. I am still getting the blue screen. I will take it to the shop tomorrow and have a tech try a recovery disk. I have read that the new update may or may not not be compatible with my hard drive. I wil see what the tech finds.
Thanks

See what your shop says. If the computer was Windows 10 compliant, then the drive should be OK with the newest updates. All my drives are fine in this regard.
Hi GPSPOW.
if you get multiple suggestions and write "That did not work" - which did you try? all? Leonie's sounded pretty well-suited, how did it go, what happened when you tried it, did startup repair run, did it say there are problems, did it say those were non-fixable? This detailed feedback is required.

Just got back from the lap top tech. Does not look good. He is trying to recover the data on the hard disk and says there is nothing there. I am waiting for an outcome on a deep dive to recover my data. I do not know why the Microsoft update would cause this but in the future I will not allow auto updates.
Thanks everyone
Thanks everyone
Microsoft Update do not break hard drives (at least not compliant hard drives and computers). There may be some other reason causing the issue.

Was not the best outcome for me.
One may try https://neosmart.net/blog/2015/windows-10-recovery-cd-free/ . Moreover, one may take a look at https://neosmart.net/wiki/0xc000000f/ which will work for windows XP,7,8.x, as well as windows 10 https://neosmart.net/EasyRE/.
