Hub v router v switches

Can someone please help explain in simple terms the difference between a hub, router and switches in the context of setting up a network?  Why would someone use one over the other?

Thx

On the following UK Amazon link when I type "network hub" I get switches appearing.  So https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=network+hub when you refer to switches, are you talking about anything from a 4 port switch costing GBP 10 to a 48 port GBP 78.00 switch like this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000WKMTUC?keywords=network%20hub%20tp-link%2048%20port&qid=1451356528&ref_=sr_1_2&sr=8-2?

I'll basically be pulling 3-4 ethernet cables from each of the 6 bedrooms I have in the house, plus a several others from other areas like main TV room, hall way etc so lots of cables.  Not all will be use but again want to future proof it  (one for TV, one for computer, one possibly for phone).

Also your question was to get a basic description of the parts which we have done.

If you need a big question on home cabling design, that might be a different question.

@u587162 - Thanks. I also see your question about Cat 6 cable.
