Addition of New IP security cameras onto Existing Home network

Hi Guys,

I would like to plan out a home network based on following requirement:

Divide home network on two separate network. One for home networking, media center, data server etc and the second one to accommodate my new project around the house installing home networking cameras for security purposes.

I would like to design the network so that the speeds on my home network for data, movies etc are not affected by the heavy load of these HD home cameras around the house. This is my main criteria. I will be saving the recordings on the these cameras around the house to a storage device.

We are working with:

- HD Cameras around the house
- Asus RT 3200 router on 192.168.10.x subnet
- Home Linux server. With a second free PCI slot ( I can buy a second network card if that is an accepted solution )

From your guys experience, what should be the best way of designing this network so that home network speeds between the client devices in the house i.e server, computers, tablets, home theater PC etc remains untouched by the new home security camera that I will be installing.

Should I be looking into VLANing option in this router OR go buy a second network card and somehow subdivide the network that way.
Any more ideas with more details of network design is appreciated.

Thanks very much!

Agree with Uros. Get the 2nd card and segregate those two networks with your Linux box using iptables routing.
