Photoshop or Illustrator – gradient BG layer that will become totally transparent just before it reaches the end of the layer.

I believe I am using the gradient tool properly. I have opaque at the left end of a slender layer (4642px wide x 500 high) and it becomes translucent (not transparent) at the right end. I need totally transparent on the right. I would like it to become transparent just before it reaches the right end; but it has to be gradual. I am sort of OK with PS and AI, so whichever is best for you. I don't think this makes any difference, but it will be saved as a .png file and used as background in an asp.net div for a website.  Thank you for any help.  --  Joe

It sounds like you have the right gradient type selected. To me, it sounds like an issue with layers. If you want a transparent gradient:
1. Using Photoshop, Create a new layer in your file.
2. Delete the Background Layer which is probably white.
3. Apply the gradient to the layer.
4. Save the file as a PNG.

Does this make sense? The objective is to make sure you do not have a background color that prevents the transparency.

The layer it's self is transparent. It has the checker pattern that signifies transparency. I am applying a gradient to that layer and I just don't want to see a definite edge on the right.  Thank you for answering so quickly.  --  Joe

Here is the files. As you said. png works well on websites. They look like they are transparent on the right, but they are not completely.  Thank you.User generated imageInfo_Banner_7.psd

And a screen shot of the web site using that PS BG layer. You can see it is not transparent on the right.
