Cannot open/import an AI file nor a EPS file in GIMP or InkScape...

Dear Experts... I recently hired a graphic designer to make a small logo for me on that website fiverr.com. He completed the logo yesterday and sent me the source as an AI format (Adobe Illustrator). I don't have AI, so I googled around and found a site that said how AI file could be opened with InkScape. So I installed InkScape, but when it opens the AI file, nothing appears... like it is empty. I also have GIMP installed, so I found another link where it said that while GIMP can't open AI format files, it can open EPS format files. So I asked the my designer to send the file in EPS format and he did so. When I try to open/import that into GIMP, it causes GIMP to crash... saying:

"GNU Image manipulation Program Plug-In has stopped working

---> Check online for a solution
---> Close the program
---> Debug the program"

And when I click to "Close the program", a window appears saying:

"Plug-in crashed 'file-ps.exe. The dying plug-in may have messed up GIMP's internal state."

...can anyone help me? Is there a format that my designer can send me that will work in GIMP or InkScape?

Thanks
   Shawn

P.S: I'm using Windows Vista, and my version of GIMP is 2.8.16

What format do you want to end up with?

Thanks Dave. I just want to ultimately make some transparent PNG's to use on my website.

Then that's the format you should ask for from your designer.  Ask for a large one at least because it's easy to make it smaller, difficult to make them larger.

OK. He's asleep now (in Pakistan), I'll ask him tomorrow. In the meantime, it would be nice to have access to either the AI or EPS file should I want to make any very minor/simple touchups. Is there a way I can open one of these?

Thanks

I don't know of any program but the Adobe programs (Illustrator or Photoshop) that will do that well.

So the technique I describe in my initial post (EPS file using GIMP), is not valid? That won't work?

I also found this website using Google, it explains how to use the free software INKSCAPE to import the Adobe Illustrator file, and then save in a format usable in GIMP:

I tried this, and the Adobe Illustrator file when imported into Inkscape, shows nothing. There is nothing there.

OK, I have a desktop computer here that a friend gave me about 6 months ago, and I found that it has CorelDraw X5 on it. I tried that to open the EPS file and it worked. So I think I'm okay now!

Thanks
