g.p 10 & s.q.l 2008 R2 not working

We prepare a computer windows 10 for testing some stuff we have and for some strange reason our g.p 10 (build 1068) is not connecting with the s.ql 2008 R2 installed in that PC; not seeing the companies.  We have done this before and have a computer with similar setup.  Please advice where to look.

Is the server end of GP 10 on the same build number? What build number does the other PC have?

Based on the build number, it looks like you installed all GP 10 updates up through the 2012 Year End Update:

According to this thread, you need at least SP5 installed (build 10.0.1579) in order to use SQL Server 2008 R2. The 2012 Year-end update should theoretically also work, since it's a later build, but it's possible that the GP 10 server and GP 10 client have to be on the same build in order to work together, and your server isn't updated.

Yes, forgot to mention, there is no server end.  The sql & gp in on the same w10 pc.  Nevertheless, based on your recommendations, in order for gp to work in sql, the apps has to be on 10.0.1579.  Ok will try.

Thanx!
My understanding of how GP works is that there's a server application and a client application. You could theoretically run both the server and the client on the same PC, but you still need both. The GP server runs on the same computer as the SQL server.

You mentioned another PC running GP, so I assumed there was a server running SQL server and the GP Server, and then 2 or more PCs running the client connecting back to the server. That's sorta the appeal of GP, the ability to connect multiple clients to the same server with all the accounting records.

As mention in the original question, we have prepare a standalone windows 10 box for testing purposes.  Within the box we installed sql2008 and afterward installed gp10.

FYI, we checked our GP version and its 10.00.1868 (much newer than the required for SQL, 10.0.1579 / SP5)

Maybe there is a step we are missing maybe?
Did you check for both the server application and the client application? Even if running on one PC, you still need both.

Did you ever check what version the PC that's currently working is using?

yes, both installed.  The currently PC that is working is same version (yes, sound super strange).
So this is a new PC setup, yes? How did you move over the GP/SQL database from the old PC?

Not a new pc; it's been upgrade to w10.  We just installed sql from scratch and copy a db over and attached it.

Since we have installed it previously and now it has problems, most probably we are missing something.  Maybe another EE can provide the steps of install and maybe considerations when it's sql 2008 with gp 10?
GP 10 is really old, and really isn't designed for running on Windows 10.  The issue could be with trying to run it on Win10. Reverting back to Windows 7 may fix the issue. Did you make a backup of the PC before the upgrade?

You could also upgrade GP and SQL to a more recent version if you want to run on Win10.

Here's the procedure on how to move a GP database to a new computer:

Yes we backed up the DB.

Though we already have a w10 pc setup as what we need, we decided to use  a Windows 8 pc to see what happens.

(we'll let u know)

Same problem; didn't work... definitely we are doing something wrong.
What's the exact problem? Is it not connecting to the SQL database, or the database is empty (no stores)?

Its not connecting.

(maybe since we need it for testing, eventually clone the good PC... but then, wouldn't know what happened)

Update: re-reading the question, we went over installation process and also see all our previous installs and effectively the problem the sql port.  For some reason we had it pointing somewhere else.
