Can I use my Word version of book for Kindle?

I have the Word version just about done and read that Amazon.com supports the upload of the book using Word format.

I have only one graphic in the book, so that should not be a problem. I have a cover that's a PDF and expect that also to be no problem.

Is this a viable way for me to quickly get going with Kindle? Once I am past having is selling on Amazon, I will have the time to start thinking about all other forms of election distribution.

Thanks.

Does this conversion require any manual configuring? If it workable, why do some authors spend lots of resource using Adobe to lay out for Kindle?

Are there for more complex layouts?

I am still trying to get my arms around understanding this process...
