VSDX files downloading as VSD files from IE 10

I have a strange one with one of our clients.

They have uploaded a vsdx file to an online document store and when they down load it from IE 10 the prompt to save as / open is renaming the extension to a .vsd??? Works fine when accessed directly from the server (downloads as .vsdx) but not from client PC's.

The user has visio 2013 installed.

How can I prevent the file extension from being renamed it's a very strange one,
Thanks

First off, in general you cannot prevent a user from saving any file with a different extension.  You can block the saving of specific file types, but you get around that by changing the extension.

Have you tried downloading the file from a different client computer? With another browser?

Typically when an Office product file extension is not available on a computer, that computer does not have software installed that supports the file extension.

Another possibility is that the file extension "vsdx"  is not registered or properly associated with Visio on the client's PC.

Hi Dan

Thanks for the comments.

In this case the user is not trying to save the VSDX file as a VSD, it is the browser on download that is showing the file as a .vsd in the save or open option.

The user has visio 2013 installed fine. After downloading the file they have to rename the extension to .vsdx to be able to open it.

It appears to be the browser that is somehow changing the extension.

Thanks
