HP LaserJet 1200 RDP Redirect Win10/7

I have a client who has an HP LaserJet 1200 connected via USB to her Windows 10 computer.  From the Windows 10 computer she RDPs into a Windows 7 computer.  Printer redirection is enabled, and the Windows fax device redirects fine, but the HP 1200 is not.

I wanted to install the driver on the Windows 7 side, but HP doesn't offer a driver download for this printer, it just says to use Windows update.

Is there any work around or some way I can make this work?

Is the printing that this user needs to do in the RDP session very... fancy? Ie does she need to make use of advanced driver functions or does she simply need to print out documents?

What you could do here is on the Win 10 PC, make a copy of that printer but use a generic driver, like HP Laser III (very standard driver) which any Windows PC/Server has support for. This one should redirect into the RDP session without any issues as there is certainly support for HP Laser III on Win 7.

Ok, tried that.  I'm seeing the 2 printers on the Windows 10 machine where its plugged in, but still not showing as redirected on the Windows 7 computer.

Printer redirection is working, because I see the Windows Fax and CutePDF redirect, so I know it's something with just this printer.

And yes, we're doing full log off's from the remote client to establish a new connection each time for testing.

Does the user have the printer redirection function permitted in their environment tab in Active Directory?

Sorry I assumed it was a domain environment. It doesn't sound like it is, can you just verify for me?

Thanks

Yes, they have that permission. As I've mentioned, other printers are redirecting, just the HP is not.

Offhand I would suggest plugging it into the win 7 pc just to get the driver Installed.
I realise this may not be possible.

Is laserjet 1200 listed in the add printer list?
If so, you could install it from there to an lpt port, then it might redirect correctly
OAC TechnologyProfessional NerdsAuthor Commented:
The 1200 is not listed in Window's add printer list.  I did try adding a printer using the LaserJet III driver as suggested by Matthew, and also using the HP Universal Printer Driver.  (HP doesn't have the 1200 driver available for download).

If you add the Universal driver to both the windows 7 and windows 10 PCs, then it should redirect.
You may also need to add the 32 bit or 64 bit driver to both in the sharing options, depending on the version of windows (i.e. if one is 32bit and the other is 64bit)
You need exactly the same versions of the driver on both PCs for redirection to work reliably.

MS Update catalog does have a driver for the LaserJet 1200 for Windows 7 & later.

I searched the update catalog for "laserjet 1200" and found this list:
https://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=laserjet%201200

All of the drivers on that list should be available in Windows. After you launch the "add printer wizard," just click on "Windows Update" button to get the full list of drivers available for whichever version of Windows you're on.  If that doesn't work, try the link above in IE to download the driver (To use that MS update site, you need to use IE because MS requires their own browser for that site....).

Printer redirection should work assuming that the LJ 1200 driver for Windows 10 and Windows 7 both have the same name.

Windows 10 isn't listed in the details of those driver downloads, any driver listed for Win8.1 drivers should work in Win10.
