GTX480 and 7600GS

hi all,

right now I think my GTX480 card is dead and my Windows can't start anymore.

I have my spare 7600GS card here and I am not sure if technically I can insert that card on the same slot.

NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS is PCIe 1.0 x16 and GTX480 is PCIe 2.0 x16, slot seems the same but I didn't try before.

motherboard supermicro X9SRA.

PCIe 1 & 2 are backward/forward compatible so it should work fine.
It's compatible.

If you are talking of PCIe versions see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express#PCI_Express_2.0 it's compatible.

If you are talking number of PCIe lanes it's still compatible.

dbrunton,

I am talking about if I unplug the 480 from that PCI-E 2.0 X 16 slot and insert 7600GG, what will happen, voltage still ok ?

motherboard burn ?
it is very good that GTX980Ti is on promotion but I don't plan to buy it until April ..... :):)
the motherboard slot for my GTX480 is PCI-E 3.0 x16 Slots, is  ok ?
the slot type are 100% match, right?

"The replacement card is going to suffer in performance compared to the dead one, but that's probably not a huge concern right now! :) "

yeah, I want to wait until more 980Ti promotion man.....

anyone you know buy 980Ti just because of the promotion ?

I just want to swap that dead card with the 7600 GS on the same slot and make my PC working ASAP.
I have one concern, the 7600GS do not have Win10 driver man..
one more thing, the slot which 480GTX insert to is a PCI-E 3.0 x16, so still no problem for that PCI-E 1.0 X 16 card ?
the links just show PCI 2.0 is backward compatible with 1.0, it doesn't say if 3.0 is doing the same to 1.0

any idea ?

tks.
hi all,

replaced with old with 7600GS and it is working now.

have one more spare display card is good !
hi all,

right now also found out 7600GS is not that stable as it don't have win10 driver, anyone know if 960/760 has any unstable problem reported ?

960GTX with 4GB DDR 5 RAM seems very affortable .
Were some problems with Nvidia drivers at one stage for Windows 10.  That may have been solved.  Or is solved.  I'd expect Nvidia to get any problems fixed eventually anyway.

Both cards are supported but the 960 is a younger card, about two years the difference.

If I was looking for long term support I'd go the 960 way.

I use the latest driver for 7600GS and you can see that they will not release drive for win10 for that hardware.

yeah, 950 GTX surprise to have OpenGL 4.5 while 960 and 970 only use 4.4.

980Ti use OpenGL 4.5 as well.

I am checking price.

you know there are reason why 7600GS don't have win10 driver.  last night screen just unstable and once it is up again, can't play youtube video.
They won't do drivers for my Radeon HD 2400XT as well.  Fortunately (at present) what is there does work under Windows 10.

but my 7600GS after I install Windows 8.1 driver on Win10, it seems working but unstable, tonight will try again!
hi here,

it is funny that in here, we only have 980 or 980TI card to buy, my 7600GS is not stable too !

anyone using AMD R9 Fury, this card memory bandwidth super fast,.

:):)
hi,

bought the 970 GTX, can't believe I buy this one as I am considering 960 and 980 Ti, but only my card still support 2 X DVI out. the rest of the model only has one DVI and I don't see any displayport to DVI-D adapter here.

970 is good as I bought the ASUS 970 OC version, yes I can overclock that.

basically other than the time win10 drop back to the lower resolution as it need to search the 970 driver and reboot, the total time on install that is very less . once reboot, everything back to Normal  !

good !
