Apple 10.6.8 server LDAP settings out of the box

Does Mac server 10.6.8 have LDAP enabled out of the box or it like windows and I have to create a domain environment thus AD is enabled first before proceeding?? Also, are the vulnerabilities significant with such an old version of server software?  Is there a way to upgrade?  It only has 4 gigs RAM but the RAID has been replaced with some large terabyte drives some time ago.

You can upgrade from 10.6.8 to OSX server.

What is the purpose of this server? Knowing this will help me to better-answer your other questions.

Sorry, I'm new.  The article does not point to a download URL for upgrading.  The server is a file server.  The client purchased a Synology DS213j for backup and perhaps file sharing/sync apps.   The plan we settled on is to enabled Time Machine on the Disk Station for the 5 Macs to backup.  Then install Cloud Station Sync on the File Server with one way sync to the Synology for security purposes.  This will enable accessibility through the DS Cloud app on the iPhone to retrieve files on the go.
This setup also places a central location for all redundant files/backups on the Synology Diskstation.  I will enable an Amazon Glacier backup from that point forward to the cloud.  I'm not sure how much effort if any I put in to upgrading the file server or performing any LDAP authentication with the Synology.  I also don't know if there's LDAP setup already on the server as my Apple server skills are limited at this point.

thanks guys for the break down.  I work primarily with Windows server so I understand the AD part.  Should I be concerned about the later version of OS X being a resource hog for a 4 gig RAM server with a Xeon processor?  Can you provide any good link for OD backup/restore in case the file server craps out?

You might be able to check with Apple directly if you want to get the older version of OS X Server.

I totally agree eoinosullivan.   I will keep them independent at that small scale with that old of a machine.  I wouldn't mind a link for OD backup and restore on future endeavors.   Especially, since Apple is so trendy these days.  Are you guys pretty stoked on the latest OS X for similar Mac and Synology envioronments or should I start thinking about some Linux distrubution to provide LDAP of some sort?  I assume PCs are not welcomed in an OS X environment but beyond is OS X ok?
The most recent versions of OSX 9/10/11 have a $20 Server upgrade pack which is  easy to install on any iMac, Mac Pro or MacMini.  The server upgrade the has OD and LDAP services included and you have links there to read more.

There should be no need for a Linux server in the mix.

There is a little known tool which allows Windows PCs to bind to an Open Directory server .. maybe useful if you have a setup with lots of macs and a mac server using open directory and just a handful of windows pcs which you'd like to authenticate against OD for login purposes .. its called pGina - http://pgina.org/
