On a directory site, why would a business want to claim its listing?

Pardon my French, what exactly do you mean by "claim its listing"?
- wants to be listed and is not?
- is listed but does not like it and wants to forbid that you publish?
- is listed but does not like how it is listed (words, looks, etc)

In such a situation, my guidelines would be: how is it useful for the visitor? what will give him the want to truts my site and the info it publishes?

fibo
padon for answering for the asker ...

you follow a link from a search or whatever and you come upon a listing for a company that has only rudimentary info about the company.
you'll see that they ask if this is your company and if you want to claim it - don't recall the exact wording but you get the idea.

the sites goal is to try and make themselves a relevant resource ...

In the case you decsribe, it is to the visitor's advantage that the factual infos about the company are listed, by the company itself if necessary.

However, product description would probably be useless if made by the company, since it would somehow say it "great" or "the best", while in most cases it is not. Therefore, rating and comments by the company (or its PR agency!) are useless for the visitor and so irrelevant.

Which additional info do you need to close the question?

Fibo - I should point out also that these aren't product listings.
This is simply address & generally what the business does and that's really about it

Hi RapidPet,

Which additional info do you need to close the question, allocating points to those answers you will find suitable?
