android phone won't sync contacts with gmail

I have an android smartphone, with a google account attached to it.  It is a samsung, galaxy phone (s5 I believe), running android OS.  I have gone into the account settings, and the google account, and told it to sync the contacts.  It says it is syncing, but when I access gmail from the web, there are no contacts showing up in the gmail contacts list.

I am concerned about losing my contacts, should something happen to my phone.  Is it possible they are being backed up, even though they don't show up in the gmail contacts?

If this is an indicator that they are not backed up, are there other ways to back up my contacts.  This is a verizon phone.  Are there any other ways to troubleshoot this, so I can get my contacts to sync with my gmail contacts?

Please help.

My wild guess is that you have a big contact list, say over 1000 contacts and you have multiple android devices.

To solve the problem, in your galaxy s5 phone, go to settings, and look for "application manager" and select "google contact sync" under all applications and clear app cache and app data under  "google contact sync".

Afterwards, go to accounts and select Google and your Google account to redo all sync and your android contacts will appear in Gmail after the sync is completed.
