Jeopardy!

I can't believe I'm asking EE this question but here it goes.

I'm trying to create Jeopardy! (The Game) in Excel and/or Powerpoint as a learning tool.   Excel is great for quick entry of Answer/Questions and Powerpoint for the Animation.  Which to choose or perhaps combining the best of both?

I thought about doing it in PPT, and there are several templates that link slides together for the Answer/Question format that have been done by EE and are now used in school settings....but....Not easy to set up (each selection must have three charts and they must all be intricately linked.  So I was thinking why not create the Answer/Statements in an excel table that is linked to a PPT where when you selected the appropriate box, it would change from the $ amount on the original face, box or cell, to the answer.  Select again, or press a specific trigger key, and it would give you the question. Select again and it would go blank (indicating the option was completed.   The matrix would be 5X5.

I'm not looking for complexity or Double or Final Jeopardy.  Just a quick way to set up the matrix of answers and questions in a automated way.  And I'm open to any ideas.  I attached one of the old PPT Templates but again, not easy to use.

Much thanks in advance.  I hope this is a fun exercise.

I developed a fully interactive games if Jeopardy a few years ago using PowerPoint and VBA. Let me did it out when I'm back in the office later today.

I would like to see that too, Jamie, thanks ~
I dug out the old project from January 2014 and have just created a temporary hidden page for it here for the purposes of seeing what it does:

http://youpresent.co.uk/free-stuff/jeopardy-like-game-in-powerpoint/

I haven't added the actually PowerPoint pptm file for download yet as I forgot that while the code copyright belongs to my company, the template design doesn't. So I need to check if I have permission to post it and have fired off an email to that effect. Sorry for the delay...
hope they say 'yes' ~ thanks, Jamie
Jamie......"very cool"!   For my purposes, I'm trying to keep this very simple so it's just Jeopardy! with no Player Names.  What I was planning to do is to load up the answers and questions and then ask the Audience to participate..... so they would raise their hand if they had the question to the answer.

Your's is the full blown game!  Which is great...... but I could use something simpler if it's easy to put together.    Is it hard to link Excel and PPTX or M? Or are you better off simply writing the VBA in PPT?  Or adding colors and transitions to Excel?

Thanks again for the help here.....

In that case, I think this is the same "manual" template from Indezine on which my version is built:

http://www.indezine.com/bank/fun-and-games/jeopardy-like-25-questions.html

I would check to see how close this gets you to your needs and then revisit VBA  if you need to modify it. I always write VBA code in the "master" Office app (where most of the stuff happens) and call other Office apps from the master as required. In this case, the master is PowerPoint. Not sure what you need Excel for in this project though?
Jamie,

May I wait to see yours instead?   I am always reluctant to put my Visa Card data into a Website.  Last month I had to report a $1,000+ theft coming out of India.  How they got my numbers, I have no idea...but it was something that was probably scanned and then sold before charging........

Thanks,

B.
Crystal and Jamie,

This was what I was thinking (see Attached).

1.) Load the data in the Data Tab
2.) A Macro sets the J Tab with the Cat. and appropriate Dollar Sign
3.) On First Click (Private Sub), it exposes the Answer.
4.) On Second Click (Private Sub), it exposes the Question.
5.) On Third Click (Private Sub), it blanks it out (meaning the cell is no longer in Play

What do you think?

Regarding your previos comment, I personally know the owner of the Indezine site and he is extremely trustworthy and is also one of the few global MVPs for PowerPoint. I checked that the payment also accepts PayPal so no need for card details. Regarding your next point, the template does the manual templated game runs using animation and you don't need macros to expose questions, answers or keep the main board updared. It's a very good implementation given it has no cide at all. The code I added for my version just manages teams, scores and resume after accidental slide show exit.

OK...... all great comments.  With that said, I'm going to close out this question and open a new one for one of the functions that need to be written with min. code.  Then I can author some additional questions and build on it.  I think I can get it done fastest in Excel and it's so easy to manipulate later.  I'm not that good with Forms but perhaps with some EE help, I can get this done one step at a time.

Thanks for all of the insight and ideas.

B.
Jamie and Crystal,

Thanks so much!  Hope you will consider picking up the next question to see if we can get this underway in Excel.

Much thanks,

B.

If you're looking for a way to house the questions/answers in an Excel file, check Merge. http://www.pptools.com/merge/index.html You can use whatever template you want and set it up to pull the info from Excel.
