"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

BEST OPTION is using a VPN ipsec between the two.
opening it up to the public is not advisable.
If the VPS are on the same network(IP segment).........

They are not same
What if any control do you have it might be open by default if they provide firewall, you would need to use port forwarding to allow access to the port on which you configured ms sql tcp/ip to listen on.

opening an SQL server to the outside is not advisable, since your VPS is from the same vendor see whether they have and option or can manage the access from one VPS to the other without opening SQL to everyone on the net.
