Can't Scan in Windows 10
I installed a new windows 10 computer a few weeks ago, I have an HP Officejet Pro 8615, Printer, scanner, etc.

Windows 10 detected the printer & works fine with that; it connects wirelessly.

Today I tried to scan. Of course, it was very difficult to figure out how to even try that. I got to All Apps, Windows Accessories, Windows Fax & Scan. Did that, clicked new scan (see attached, upper left), I get the error message.

Somehow found HP Scan & Print Doctor (or something like that) on line, went to that, downloaded a bunch of stuff it said to download, same result,

How do I scan in Windows 10?

It worked fine on a different computer in Windows 7.

Installing a driver for the printer does not install the scanning component.
Get a driver from hp for your scanner.

Hi Richard,
I suggest downloading/installing what HP calls the "Full Feature Software and Drivers". This will install not only the drivers, but supporting software as well, including whatever scanning software that HP bundles with that particular All-in-One. The download page is here:
http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-officejet-pro-8610-e-all-in-one-printer-series/5367603/model/5385104#Z7_3054ICK0K8UDA0AQC11TA930O2

Be sure to select W10 for the OS:

It was a very recent release, updated 6-Dec-2015, so there's a good chance that it will work on recent W10 Builds, although I can't confirm that from personal experience. Regards, Joe

To McKnife,

There is no separate driver for the scanner. I did a Google search "Hp8615 Scanner Driver".

It led me to driver for the device , I downloaded, went through all that rigmarole. Took 15 minutes or more.

I get the attached. It cannot scan.

Absurd.

At least I can still print.

I was afraid after doing all that, that would be screwed up too.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you...dog needed a walk. :)

Where did you download it from?

> cant_scan2.jpg

The screenshot shows 8610. It's possible that the same software and driver work on the 8615, but are you certain that you downloaded the right package — for the 8615 and for W10? Also, 32-bit/64-bit matters with drivers — make sure you have the right bit level for your W10.

I'd like to see what TWAIN and WIA drivers you have installed. An easy way to do that is with IrfanView, excellent (free) imaging software that I've been using for many years. After installing it, click the File menu, then Select Scan/TWAIN Source.... It will show all your TWAIN and WIA drivers. For example, mine looks like this:

Joe,

I am totally confused.

I went back to HP, made sure Windows 10 was selected, did it again, it almost instantly said I was up to date. So I gather that to mean it thought it was OK.

I know from past experience that HP uses a generic HP 8610 designation for 8615. See attached,

I went to that Infraview link, downloaded, got TOTALLY different things, see attached driver_update.jpg.

There is no infraview app that I can see under apps, I have no clue how you got that image you showed me.

I'm thinking this  "Driver Update" thing may be a virus; should I delete it?

Thanks

That's good news! You have a TWAIN driver for the device that IrfanView recognizes. Try to scan with it by clicking the File menu, then Acquire/Batch Scanning.... Can you scan with IrfanView?

Joe,

I did that, see attached. First error0, then 1.

My reaction is nonsense, I can print, there HAS to be a driver.

Avatar of Joe WinogradJoe Winograd🇺🇸

You said in your original post, "it connects wirelessly". Do you mean that the 8615 is network-connected wirelessly to your router? If not, how is the 8615 connected? Network-connected wired to your router? USB-connected to your PC?

> I can print, there HAS to be a driver.

Not necessarily. I've seen many All-in-One/Multi-Function devices that can still print, but not scan, when moving to a new version of Windows. That because it's not uncommon to have print drivers that work and scan drivers that do not work on the new OS.

Avatar of Richard KortsRichard Korts🇺🇸

ASKER

Joe,

I am not a hardware techie.

I can tell you that the new computer has only ONE cord running to it and it's the power cord. Likewise the printer.

I don't understand how it works, it's magic, but it does.

Try explaining a garage door opener to a cowboy from the old west.

I suppose I can scan to my wife's Win 7 computer, then email myself the documents.

So is there no way to scan from this device to Win 10? Or do I have to go to HP support?

> I can tell you that the new computer has only ONE cord running to it and it's the power cord. Likewise the printer.

OK, so that must mean that the 8615 is connected wirelessly to the router.

> So is there no way to scan from this device to Win 10?

That's what I'm trying to help you figure out. But such troubleshooting is not always easy.

Another idea: maybe your W10 machine doesn't have an IP address for the device. Since it is wirelessly connected, it will have an IP address like 192.168.0.100 or 10.0.1.100 (those are just examples). Read this EE article:
Scanners and Cameras Applet in Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10

Run the Scanners and Cameras applet on your W10 computer. Is your 8615 in there? If so, click the Properties button, then the Network Setting tab. Is there a proper IP address in there? For example, mine looks like this:

User generated image
Now check it on your wife's W7 computer. Does it have the same IP address as your W10 computer? If not, enter the address from your wife's W7 computer (since that works for scanning) into the IP address field on your W10 computer. Does that fix scanning on the W10 PC?

> Or do I have to go to HP support?

Going to the manufacturer is always an alternative, although I've heard many EE members say that the help they get here is better than the help from hardware and software vendors. Regards, Joe

Avatar of Richard KortsRichard Korts🇺🇸

ASKER

Joe,

I ran the scanners & cameras thing, see attached, I clicked Add a Device, it gave the list at upper left, which does NOT include HP as a choice.

Sorry the screen shot is superimposed on your last EE post.

does the scanner show in device manager - or an unknown device?

That AIO supports WSD scanning.
go to start> settings > devices.
If the hp isn't shown, click "add a printer or scanner"
it should appear, click on "add device"
If you click on it in "installed devices", is should offer to download an app for you.
If not, then scroll down and click on "devices and printers", then right-click on the new device, and you should see something like the attached image

Joe Winograd,

I found the file in my downloads folder.

I right clicked, ran as Admin.

It got to where is said "installing", took about 10 minutes & then failed,

Then I though I'd try as you suggested in compatibility mode.

There is no compatibility tab, or I'm not doing it right.

Thanks

I think that the problem is that the WSD driver is already installed,  and you are trying to install the legacy driver over the top. That is not how windows10 does things. The two are incompatible.
On the printer settings page, the printer is showing as installed.
When you install a web services device, it installs the printer and the scanner simultaneously.
Scroll down to the bottom of that page, click on "devices and printers" under "related settings",
User generated imagethen right-click on the printer. It should have a scan menu.

To all,

My gut feel is that this device cannot be installed in Win 10 with the scanner recognized. HP problem, printer was not built to do this with Windows 10.

Printer works fine as a printer.

Avatar of Joe WinogradJoe Winograd🇺🇸

> My gut feel is that this device cannot be installed in Win 10 with the scanner recognized. HP problem, printer was not built to do this with Windows 10.

My gut says the same. The "Full Feature Software and Drivers" file appears when you select Windows 10 at the download site (it shows the OJ8610_198.exe file), but your experience indicates that it works only for printing, not scanning. Before giving up the ghost, you may want to try just the drivers, which are here:

32-bit
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/COL51189/bi-124096-4/OJ8610_Basicx86_198.exe

64-bit
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/COL51190/bi-124097-4/OJ8610_Basicx64_198.exe

But those same drivers should be in the "Full Feature Software and Drivers" file, so I doubt it will help. One other thought — are you sure that you downloaded the correct bit-level (32 or 64) for your W10? Regards, Joe

Device Manager doesn't have a Scanners and Cameras section. It has an Imaging devices section:

The Scanners and Cameras applet used to be in Control Panel in XP. MS removed it from Control Panel is W7/W8/W10, but this article shows how to get it back:

Richard,
What does it show when you click Properties? You may recall that in a previous post I wanted you to check the Network Setting tab of that dialog, but at the time, the scanner wasn't there. Now that it is, you've made progress! Maybe if you set the right IP Address it will work:

I award Nobus some points because his comment led me to see the scanner & thus try a scan, which worked.

Joe,

I have been doing this computer stuff a looooooooooooong time, in fact, the first computer I worked on in a business environment was an IBM 7090 vacuum tube machine with 64K  of 36 bit words in 1962.

It would seem most logical to me that both Microsoft & HP would want their products to work together in Windows 10 & it's NOT magic so I figured there HAD to be a way.

I am a HUGE fan of EE, you are one of the REALLY strong resources there. I recommend EE to everyone; I would say I have a success rate of about 90% using it. That is exceptional especially for the incredibly low price.

It is fascinating to me that at the time that IBM 7090, with punched cards, card to tape, no discs was one of the most powerful computers in the world. Today my iPhone is a MILLION times more powerful than that, not to mention my PC with 6 gb of memory, etc. & servers all over the world.

If the people back then (including me) could have seen what we take for granted now, they would have literally died of future shock.

Avatar of Joe WinogradJoe Winograd🇺🇸

Richard,
Thanks for the kind words — I appreciate hearing them. Your involvement in computers pre-dates mine — I began in January 1966 (celebrating 50 years this month!) during my second semester junior year of college with the Univac 1107 Thin-Film Memory Computer (a solid-state, not vacuum-tube machine). Then went on to work with the Univac 1108, and then the RCA Spectra 70 series virtual memory machines. Yes, today's smartphone has more memory and storage than all of them put together! Cheers, Joe

Glad you got it sorted Richard.
Just want to mention that a lot of people are having problems like this with windows 10.
Mainly because of conflicts with legacy drivers and the automatically installed WSD ones.
I work for a company that sells printers and scanners amongst other things.
We often have to disable one or the other to get things working.

Avatar of nobusnobus🇧🇪

Joe, sorry for the wrong term - but i am not english speaking, so of ten i use the wrong word
but DEVICE Manager stays what it is - it is NOT devices and printers
i Always start from the start, so i look if it is SEEN in DM - then we can decide how to proceed - usually that is to do a scan from PAINT> File>import from scanner (that needs no additional program)

Richard, thanks for the points and words

A printer is a peripheral which makes a persistent human readable representation of graphics or text on paper or similar physical media. Traditional printers are being used more for special purposes, like printing photographs or artwork, and are no longer a must-have peripheral; 3D printing has become an area of intense interest, allowing the creation of physical objects. An image scanner is a device that optically scans images, printed text, handwriting, or an object, and converts it to a digital image. Hand-held scanners, where the device is moved by hand, have evolved from text scanning "wands" to 3D scanners used for industrial design, reverse engineering, test and measurement, orthotics, gaming and other applications.
