i'm not sure i can get the non-breakable-space in the original file since it is usually cannot contain non-printable characters except tab, newline, and carriage return.<br />

Can't you replace the leading spaces by a tab character?<br />
If the inputfile is in xml format, the &amp;nbsp; character is a valid value<br />

(To process xml data in word you have to make a xsd)

I have a tab delimited file. Some of the fields have leading spaces. When I use Mail Merge in Word 2013, the leading spaces are missing.<br />
I tried a comma separated file where each field has quotes. Mail merge could not figure out the delimiter. I tried using quote and then tried comma.
