considering that in the outlook preview I see the number instead of #VALUE, I suspect the file has the info my users need.<br />
It's hardly realistic to expect senders to break links before sending a file. This is to do some ongoing data consolidation.<br />

when you open the file for the first time you should have received a warning that links cannot be updated, if you choose continue at that point the last values will remain. if you go to data 'update all' it might re-trigger the behaviour but if you have saved the files with #value you may be stuck

what is weird is that the file show the numbers perfectly in excel 2010, as well as from the outlook 2013 preview screen ... Makes me think the last values are still in the file, but that I'm missing an option in excel 2013 to get them to display...

In excel 2010, when opening  a sheet with data coming from linked docs, if the docs are unavailable it shows the last value.
In excel 2013, the same sheet shows #VALUE. Weird thing: in the outlook 2013 preview, it actually shows the values like excel 2010 does.

How can I open the sheet with 2013 and get the last value a-la excel 2010?
