Should both www and naked domain be registered as properties in Google Search Console?

I have a small business doing computer tech support and helping small businesses with websites and SEO. I One thing that has confused me that no one has been able to answer is when you create a new website and add it as a property in Google Search Console you get an email suggesting things you should do.

The first suggestions says “Make sure you add both "www" and "non-www" versions for your site. Also, if you use the HTTPS protocol, add those variations as well”  Does that mean I have to create two properties for each website an www and a non www? If so then I have to manage the settings in both properties.

Hi techhelptrainer,
Google Analytics (GA) by default sets its cookie on the exact domain. If you are on "www.yourdomain.com" then it will set it for "www.yourdomain.com" and it will not be visible on "yourdomain.com" or some other subdomain. If however you specify to GA to use "yourdomain.com" then it will be available on any subdomain.

You may set your preferred domain to resolve www or non www issue for the tracking.

Thanks for your reply. I am using Wix to build websites, they provide easy way to connect to Google Analytics so I am not sure which one they are using maybe I should check, my question was when I create the property at Search Console. It sounds like I should create one for which ever is the exact domain that is reported to Google Analytics and then in SC set my preferred domain for that one instead of creating two properties in SC.

As you can tell I am a bit confused.
Hey techhelptrainer,

That's a good question. Let's go from basic to end.

Google treat your domain as xyz.com and www.xyz.com is your subdomain like idea.xyz.com

Google will by default consider your HTTPS, but incase if you've HTTPS then it's advisable to add it. Because it helps in ranking.

About adding two version. Well, just add any one version and you can choose any version to crawl from search console. Below image will guide you with how?

You can choose the one from search console which is feasible with your choice!

Hope it helps. Let me know if any,

Good luck!
