I finally figured it out - but paint.net has a faulty .ico export so I used GIMP (a bit more complex than paint.net).<br />

Note that the option is <b>-colors</b> (multiple). 256 is also possible and gives the same size image as Paul's. Hope this works but I feel there is a bit of a problem with that WinZip program, is it an old version perhaps? I googled it and found a pretty long list of acceptable ICO formats.

Thanks Robert, yes my version of SelfExtractor IS quite old, but it *does* work when the icon file size is &lt;&nbsp;3072. I just tried taking your icon and running it in Irfanview to try to make the background of it transparent. It did so, but in the process inflates the size of the icon up to 3,262 bytes... just over the threshold &nbsp;:-(<br />

I've been looking at using this option: <b>-transparent &quot;#241D48&quot;</b> but it doesn't seem to work. In some cases it does add transparency (wrong part of image strangely enough) but again, you've guessed it, back to 4286 bytes...<br />

Then I tried using XnView which I happened to have on my system and it seems it did a better job, first converted to less colors, then set the transparent color, result attached.<br />

Did you try other formats by the way? Maybe a png would work but I don't know how you configure the icon within the program, maybe that's not an option at all, just remembered that it was mentioned for the newer version.

Actually one more try: the file size is the same but the previous file had 128 colors and I have now chosen 256 because it is mentioned <a href="http://kb.winzip.com/kb/entry/180" rel="ugc">here</a> that 8 bit coloring is one of the accepted formats (but not 7 bit perhaps)...<br />

Ok, well if you want to try something in the mean time, a couple of remarks:<br />

- you said at some point that it did work with a small enough file, did that contain transparency? If so, can you share it?<br />
<br />
- you said you tried renaming the file to PNG but that's not what I meant before, I meant actually converting to PNG format (which supports transparency, JPG would be less useful in that sense). I'll attach an example, this is just the original file saved as png from xnview. If that doesn't work (grasping at straws now), try renaming that one to .ico?<br />

Well that's strange. In XnView it shows as 32 bit color but the file size corresponds to the 16 color icons we created earlier.<br />

The reason this one works could be in the palette, specifically transparency, there does not seem to be much difference between this file and the ones created by ImageMagick initially but there must be something...<br />

I tried something new with this file: I opened it in Photoshop, cleared it, copy-pasted the new image (converted to 16 colors) onto it, adjusted the alpha channel manually and saved it. It looks a bit funky but could you test this file please?<br />

I have tried to correct a bit by pixelating it but there's only so much I can do because there seem to be some crucial colors missing, I need to check whether I can change the palette because I feel for example the red from the original icon is taking up valuable palette real estate.
