Bt phone line & cisco 837 & asa5505 connection advice

Ive recently had a phone line & broadband installed using a bt connection but my isp is xln.

due to not using their router the bt engineer only left a phone line physical connection & no rj45 connection which i was expecting.

the orange/white & orange pair wires is currently used for the phone line but there are another pair of blue/white & blue wires unused.

I have my own punch tool.

question1. can anyone advise which physical interface ie rj11 which i think it should be with BT as i have an adsl cisco 837 router & i have an asa5505 rj45 connection which i would also like to use ?

If I understand correctly you want to know how to connect the phone to the BT router using an RJ-11 connector?
This implies that it should be an analog phone (connection). Just to check, because your were talking about an RJ-45, do you have an analog phone to use or is it a VOIP device?

hi ernie,

I just assumed I have an analogue phone because I have a bt connection but when discussing with isp:xln who is the 3rd party who I have the broadband order with, so I assume it is a broadband/digital connection.

as for the rj11, well on my cisco 837 it has an (adsl) port but as far as I was aware it is actually the same size as an rj11 so maybe I have an adsl connection.
I have no bt router as the engineer did not leave me one, as all the engineer did was leave me with a phone line and no internet connection due to the order via my isp:xln, but the engineer said that the broadband has been added.

there was obviously a mix up with the order via isp:xln, but the bt engineer said that I could purchase a face plate to replace the phone connection and do it myself, which I am cable of doing but wanted to seek advice confirmation first.
Ah, ok.
So:
-BT Installed the physical line over which you want to use broadband internet (through XLN).
-You want to use your own router (Cisco 837) for the internet connection.
-"so maybe I have an adsl connection"....... You aren't sure what you got/ordered?

Am I getting the picture so far?
hi isp:xln asked me if I wanted their router for £9.99 but I said no because I wish to use my own asa5505 router which has an rj45 connection.

bt engineer then came out added the internet and phone line but only left me with a phone connection, but if I had used isp:xln router then bt engineer would have put that connection in...there was obviously a breakdown of agreement with isp:xln and bt.

I have  routers:

- asa5505 - rj45 port
- cisco 837 - adsl port

ideally it would be nice if I can make use of both....if I cannot then I would like to use my asa5505 firewall.
im thinking if I do not have an adsl connection...which I do not think I have as the engineer said it was broadband...

if the above is correct I was going to purchase from the shop a (cabled phone interface ->rj45 interface), which I assume .
I am going to make some assumptions here:

-BT delivered the infrastructure over which you can use an ADSL connection.
-The ADSL connection goes through XLN (as your provider).
-You have one wire pair which would implicate an analog line (ISDN uses two pairs: four wires).

So this would imply you have ADSL over an analog line (annex A).

For that you have the right router. The 837 is for ADSL over POTS (plain old telephone service).

DO NOT use the ASA for that! The ports on the ASA are ethernet ports, not ADSL.

So to answer your question (assuming my assumptions are correct):
-You need to connect the 837 to the phone line (using the ADSL port).
-Configure that to be used with XLN.
-Connect the ASA behind the 837 (using the ethernet port(s))
-Configure the ASA for internet use.
Missed your 11:11:19 comment.

Broadband is a generic term. ADSL is one example of a broadband connection.
You can't just put a converter in between and hook it up with an ethernet device, those are whole different technologies. Worst case you will blow up some ports on your devices.
yes 2 wires currently being used:

- white/orange & orange - yes currently

there are 2 other spare wire curled up:

- white/blue & blue

so yes it does appear I have an adsl connection.
my thoughts:

1.  just so you know I have configured my asa5505 in the passed with the built-in dhcp - successfully.

2.  while I wait for isp: xln to resolve my issue I would like to get familiar with the 837 but I am not sure what the config should be as I do (not wish to use the asa5505 built-in dhcp), as I have an internal win 2008 dhcp running.

837:

config t
ip routing
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 x.x.x.x. (pointing to my public static ip provide via my isp on say...vlan2 for example)

nat - inside/outside (I will need to configure)

int eth0
description connected to private address-asa-firewall
ip address 192.168.0.1/24
full duplex
no shut

asa5505:

int eth0
description connected to 837
ip address 192.168.0.2/24
duplex full
no shut

int eth0/1
description connected to cisco-switch-internal-lan
switchport trunk allowed vlan 1-2
no shut
This might go a bit beyond the scope of the original question. And to be able to configure the router you'll need some info from your ISP (like username, password, PVI/PCI etc.) depending on how the router is to be set up.
There are lots of examples to find here on EE: https://www.experts-exchange.com/searchResults.jsp?searchType=ALL&searchTerms=Cisco+837+Configuration&asSubmit=true&asSelected=true to get you familiarized with the router.
yes I have the following from the isp:

- username
- password
- static ip

If you said yes to my config and filled in the specific gaps for me .... (I would create another separate thread and give you all the points.!!)..as when I ring isp: xln they will eventually cut me off while re-ordering presumably the correct order if they provide it...so time is of the essense if I am to take advantage of the 837 gui.

my current internet connection is via my mobile phone as I currently do not have broadband but obviously wanting to get it done.
It's not about the points, doing this for fun ;) Points are just a nice-to-have. Its more to keep things unambiguous.

If you want to try and see if the 837 works with XLN, have a look at: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/long-reach-ethernet-lre-digital-subscriber-line-xdsl/asymmetric-digital-subscriber-line-adsl/71110-adslguide-pppoa-opt2.html

And see if that suits you. It could be that you need more info from your ISP like the PVC values. Also, I did assume that its using PPPoA.
hi ive purchased a phone/adsl filter to connect 2my temporary 837 router.

question 1.  spoke to my isp: xln provider & they suggested i could purchase their basic router & setup port forwarding pointing to my asa5505 which an rj45 connection...is this right bearing in mind the advice you gave me previously ?
Sort of. It would make things easier for you to set up, but you'd only want to do that if their router can be put in bridge mode.
That way you can configure everything on the ASA and don't have to bother with configuring that router.

Using portforwarding to the ASA would be..... suboptimal, you don't want to do that. Just give XLN a call and tell them you want a router in bridge mode. Let's see what they have to say about that.
ok will ask.  I have another question regarding the links you sent me for configuring sdm.

Ive configured sdm and all is up & runnin ie lan & wan, nat links private 2 my public static address & the firewall is in place.

I can ping from my xp the following:

- public address - successful
- 8.8.8.8 - successful

question1  But i cannot open a web page ?

I followed the wizard for sdm that configured everything.
Ive even added the domain name of mt isp : xln.co.uk
Ive switched off my xp firewall but still no internwt webpage.

question 1.  Xln did state that ports 80 & 443 are blocked and i can use any other ports but im not sure where to change ?
Wan configuration is:

Encapsulation: pppoa(aal5mux))
Vpi/vci: 0/38
Static ip: added provided via isp: xln
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Authentication/ Chap: added & provided via xln
So you can ping by IP address from a computer plugged in to the router?
But you can't ping by name, like ping www.google.com ?
hi ernie correct.
Just so u no ive only got currently ie6/sp2 installed on xp pc as i currently have no internet access.
Ive just thought they have only given me the following:

- static ip - that i assume should be local on my asa
- subnet mask
- dg - none
You might want to check what is set up as DNS server(s) on your XP machine. Looks like it is a DNS issue.
my internal dhcp is my internal

Network: 192.168.0.0/24
Default router: 192.168.0.1

when i configured sdm i completed the public & private static ip address i was given via isp xln

there was a box to add next hop if i did not add the above static ip so i left blank.

I assumed my nat linked internal 192.168.0.1 with my public static ip in order to detect my isp dns.

when i asked isp: xln for their dns ip address they stated that there is multiple so i would not need it.

Ive now done sh ip route on 837 & it shows a direct connection:

62.24.254.203

Ive now also added:

Ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 62.24.254.203
there is no dns detected on xp.  I just assumed nat would resolve as i have never configured 837 properly before.
my isp: xln stated that their multiple dns is dynamic so would not need it.

guess what i explained to them & they gave me the ip addresses in the end even though them originally informing me their dns are dynamic when in my mind those dns servers would be linked and my details would propagate more than likely across all dns for redundancy.

as a result my internet is up via xp.
Good to hear :)
hurray.

as i have version: 12.3(2)xc2 there appears i cannot configure anything else via the gui, such as remote vpn, i only have a basic account with cisco so is there any updates or this asdm version as i dont know the difference ?
I'm more a CLI guy so don't know that much about SDM. But to get updates for IOS or SDM you'll need to have a smartnet to be entitled.
ok appreciated for your time.

yes im a cli gut aswell but i thought about time i take a look.
Sound advice.  All that was missing was isp dns. Now internet via xp successful.
My pleasure mate, glad I could help.
