Can text be turned into a nice jpeg?
Putting up a website.
User will be met with a slide show on the home page.
In addition to conventional photos, we'd like to add quotations, but make them look really classy. For example,
"We hold these truths to be self-evident,
that all men are create equal."

My thought is that this will involve a word processing application with a text editor (like MS Word) that allows user to provide fancy backgrounds (like Photoshop.)
We need this to be freeware.

will paint.net work as far as removing background and converting?

Unfortunately, the plug-in to open PDF files in paint.net does NOT seem to work. But if you print PDF as .jpg as akb suggests, then you can use paint.net to remove the background. You will then have to save this .jpg file as .png to conserve the transparent background.
