Need to change hard disk on HP Laptop that has been upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Unable. No boot/bios menus when new disk is put in!!

Hi guys,

I've got an HP Portege laptop which has been upgraded from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro. However, when I put a new SSD disk in, I'm not getting any boot options etc.

I've put the old disk back in. Do I have to do something with UEFI or something along those lines? Any help would be great...

Thank you

Yes I am assuming you want to re-install windows on your NEw SSD .

So you have to go to bios and choose CD/DVD rom as your 1st boot option. I believe Hard Drive is set to be your 1st boot option now.

Follow the steps

This document describes how to permanently change the computers boot options through BIOS.

1.Turn on the computer, and then immediately click F10 to enter the BIOS.

2.Under the Advanced tab, select Boot Options.

3.From the list of options, select an option to move to the first in the boot order, and then select Save to save this change.

4.Under the Main tab, select Save changes and exit, and then select Yes when prompted.

Thanks for your effort, but it didn't work.

When I turn it on I get:

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent.
Insert system disk in drive.
Press any key when ready.

I've changed the hard disk back and forth so many times now..lol.

I get a feeling that with the new Windows OS, I have to log in and change something in the advanced settings. Then turn it off and put new disk in and somehow boot.

Hey MASQ, thanks for that. I'll try this now. But then my issue is that if I take out the old disk with the OS installed and I put the new disk into the laptop, I get no BIOS boot menu. I can't go in at all.

For your first paragraph, should I just put the old disk in and follow those instructions? Then take the disk out and put the one in and follow paragraph 2?

Thank you
Please Answer 1 of my question

Are you trying to install windows on you new SSD using a windows CD/DVD ?

if your answer is yes then plug in your new SSD and turn your laptop on and do the step.

Then you mentioned
and I put the new disk into the laptop, I get no BIOS boot menu. I can't go in at all.

BIOS is independent of any peripherals. If you are not able to go the BIOS after you added your new SSD , Answer this

Can you go to BIOS using your OLD drive ?

This will let me know that F10 is the key to the BIOS. Older HP Laptops use DEL key for the BIOS.
You should see what key is for Setup/BIOS during POST.

Check you've got it in Boot Mode first - then if it's not working with the SSD maybe check model number for SSD support - BTW when did HP start making Porteges???
Are you trying to move from a working HDD to a SSD drive? If yes then get a copy of Paragon Migrate OS to SSD and clone the drive to SSD drive.
Then simply exchange the drives in laptop and boot from new drive.

Hi guys,

Right, so to answer some of the questions:

Kmitra - I am installing using a USB. I would not get any menus for going into the BIOS if I put the new hard disk into the laptop. Yes I can access the BIOS with the old drive. I had to go into the BIOS and change the boot mode to UEFI and save it. Then when I put the new hard disk into the laptop, I was able to access the BIOS menus and F12 boot order menu. If I put the new drive into the laptop, I can't access anything using any of the F10, F5, F2 keys. Nothing at all.

MASQ - Your method has been working. However, the USB don't read for some reason. I get 'Insert system disk in drive. Press any key when ready' and when I do the thing doesn't boot. I've tested this USB device and it definitely boots up with other devices. Also, the disk is indeed an SSD and is a Samsung 850 Evo. Sorry about the typo, you're right, it's a Toshiba Portege:)

Noxcho - Can I do this even via a laptop? As I was following a guide to clone the current disk to a destination, but that would require my new SSD disk to be inserted whilst the old one is in there too right?
As long as you have a SATA to USB box or converter - yes. A USB docking station for a SATA drive for example.
If none of such available then use Backup & Recovery Free: https://www.paragon-software.com/home/br-free/
Take a backup of entire drive to USB drive, then connect the SSD drive, boot the machine from USB stick with recovery media for backup and recovery and perform restore.
But frankly speaking using Migrate OS to SSD via USB docking station would be an optimal solution for your task.
OK despite my previous post try disabling Secure Boot - leave everything else the same
i also would disable secure boot
but you do not have ANY problem when booting from the old drive ?
it could be a bad drive  (interface problem?)- so test with any drive you have to be sure

Guys, I managed to get it all working. Even after I changed to a new SSD it disliked the USB boot device. It preferred to do the DVD boot. Very annoying, but managed it:))
then i wonder why you choose that answer?

Nobus -  I tried the methods given by Kmitra and like I mentioned earlier, it would not recognise the boot system at all. I couldn't try the methods given by Noxcho as they meant getting a converter etc.

Therefore, the only one method which actually ended up working was the one given by MASQ. The laptop did not at all like the USB, so I merely changed to a DVD drive.

Do you believe I gave points unfairly?
Points are nothing but a way to appreciate us. I don't answer question just to get points. In a way solving problems is a challenge and it keeps your knowledge sharpen.

I hope at least few not all of the fellow experts will say the same.

Thanks
no - it's ok for me; but it was confusing me

I absolutely agree with all of the above points made.

Kmitra ,  Nobus and Noxcho -  I definitely did appreciate allof your help on this. I will ensure that I point that out better next time. Apologies for the confusion and thanks for taking the time to answer my question.
Thanks Yashy.  I just caught your accept message on the way out to work today and TBH at the time thought much the same as nobus, but on a second read can now see what you meant.  Just for reference I've since discovered that Boot from USB for doesn't seem to be supported on any UEFI enabled Porteges. Why Toshiba have decided to lock that down or if it is just yet another setting buried in the firmware interface I don't know!
