No sound on Win 8.1 laptop, and sound system icon control greyed out

Customer has a Lenovo 8.1 Pro laptop.  Up until now, he could use his internal speaker, or plug external speakers into the speaker jack.  But now he gets no sound at all.

Device manager shows:
Realtek High Definition Audio
WSAudioDevice_383

Both say they are enabled and working normally.  I believe the Realtek is standard with the lapotp, but don't know what the 2nd one is.

One thing that may be related: He has no volume control in his system tray, and if I go to control panel > all control panel items > notification area icons > system icons, the one for Volume is greyed out, so I cannot click on the Behaviors dropdown.

Any ideas of suggestions would be appreciated.  TIA
