custom domain email with gmail - free?

I was looking at a tutorial to take my purchased domain name so that I can use gmail to send out and receive message with my own domain email name. But then I was reading that google apps make you pay $5-10/month. So what is it? Free or not? Am I missing something?

Google Apps for Business is a commercial product and costs about $5/user/month.
