Dynamics CRM 2011 Error

after windows updates on our CRM server all users are getting the following message:

An error has occurred.
Try this action again. If the problem continues, check the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Community for solutions or contact your organization's Microsoft Dynamics CRM Administrator. Finally, you can contact Microsoft Support

i have been searching all over for the solution; any and all help is greatly appreciated

Do you have a screenshot of the error, or at which point it comes up? Is it upon logging in, or even before logging in?

Do you know if there were any CRM update rollups applied by any chance? If you can go to the server, go to Programs and Features and look at all the recently installed items sorted by Installed On. Also then check the Installed Updates view for the same. Anything for CRM that was modified?

Also check Event Viewer Application and System logs, is anything related to CRM logged there?

Finally, consider enabling CRM tracing to see if details are captured that might help pinpoint the root cause: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/907490

Other things worth considering, is your CRM environment a "simple" one with just one server, do you have SQL and the application or separate servers, are you using IFD to connect or just the plain vanilla login method?

we didn't do any updates to CRM, only input of data
no CRM update rollups or anything else updated recently either
looking over the event viewer application and system logs nothing jumps out so far
single server windows 2008 r2 enterprise only running the dynamics 2011 nothing else

If possible, check which updates you applied. There may be a known conflict (or not known one). I would try enabling the CRM tracing to find out what is going on if issues persist.

I have enabled the trace but am not seeing anything in the logs
looking over the updates, all are important or recommended
only optional are KB3080079 - update for update for windows server 2008 r2 x64 and KB3102429 - update for windows server 2008 r2 x64
getting this is in event viewer
CrmTrace encountered an error. Additional Info:Error in GetFileName : Error accessing file c:\crmdrop\logs\CRM_SRVR-w3wp(4524#FB92673C)-CRMWeb-20160210-1.log (Reporting Process:w3wp, AppDomain:C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics CRM\CRMWeb\)

whoajack
able to find the cause after i got the trace working properly
found that some permissions were deleted due to domain controller being down for an extended period of time
once i setup the permissions again in the AD organizational unit (OU) for the CRM all is working
