asked on

"To install the software, you must be logged on to an administrator account"

I get this message when trying to install a new printer from the DVD even though I am logged on using one of the main SBS domain admin accounts, same if I run as Admin from the command prompt and downloading the software.

This seems a problem since upgrading to Windows 10 Pro form 7 Pro.

Am I missing something, a setting I need to change?

Hi Bill,

You can simple remove this message by disabling UAC.

If the problem continues then its possible that you have a Group Policy Enforcement for prompting on installs.

Kind Regards,

Hi Bill,

Not a problem.

Try reviewing this website http://superuser.com/questions/464758/how-do-i-disable-administrator-prompt-in-windows-8 it contains information about disabling via group policy.

This should remove at policy level.
You should be able to right click the installer and do a run as, as a protective measure windows runs programs with user level permissions even when logged in as an admin.

Also check that you are an admin for that machine.

To add to Wes's idea you can also add the user to the local admin group on the machine.

There are setups that act really weird.
For a test, try the built-in administrator account "administrator".

I have tried the "Run as" option, as well as using the test account I use on the server, plus 2 users (on their pcs) with administrator rights,

I will go through LL's link as I suspect it is a GP problem,

You can't use a User ID with Administrator rights.
As the group policy is what is giving you the message.

You need to login with the  local administrator profile which the group policies are not applied to.

"As the group policy is what is giving you the message" - definitely wrong. The UAC GPOs, whatever you would set would not lead to this message.

This is the error. As you say LOCAL admin should be ok.

Good that you have it running, but the reason why it failed was not GPOs. GPOs for UAC apply to all accounts, also to local accounts. When you logged on as "local admin", did you use "administrator"? That's what I told you you should try.

McKnife see attachment for the Group Policy that would produce the message.
